For this project, I inserted white marking flags into preexisting holes made by nailing, drilling, or stapling that have accumulated within Building 945 at the Headlands Center for the Arts since its construction in 1907. Building 945 is part of Fort Barry, a former US Army installation that began operation in 1908 for the United State's coastal, harbor, and anti-aircraft defense. In 1972 the US Army passed on the land and buildings to the National Park Service. In 1982, a group of artists and like-minded individuals created the founding board of directors for the Headlands Center of the Arts, which now occupies several historic 1900s military buildings, such as Building 945, which is currently a workspace for artists. I see the insertion of the white flags as a way of marking time and bringing attention to the past and present functions of Building 945 - something I wanted to do before many of the holes get filled from a lead abatement that will take place this coming January.
